In a First, U.N. Evacuates Dozens of Refugees from Libya to Italy

According to this article in the New York Times (23 Dec., 2017),

‘Dozens of refugees and migrants who were held in detention in bleak conditions in Libya were evacuated to Italy late on Friday night, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency.

It is the first time that the organization has relocated people from Libya directly into Europe. The group of 162 refugees and migrants from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen arrived at a military base near Rome aboard two planes.’

Now, I don’t disagree with these vulnerable migrants being airlifted out of Libya, but what I do disagree with is that they have been brought to Europe. Why could not U.N. ot return them to their countries of origin i.e. Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen? Why is Europe responsible for them when it should be their own countries or the African Union.
