Clean-up following protests in Madrid

Bins were set on fire in the neighbourhood of Lavapies

A clean-up is underway in Madrid after protests in the Spanish capital turned violent.

People were protesting the death of a Senegalese street vendor, 35-year-old Mamme Mbage. He is reported to have died of a heart attack following a crackdown by local police on people illegally selling goods. Street vendors are a common sight in the Spanish capital and move around the city on a daily basis to avoid the police.

In response, bins were set on fire and bus stops were smashed.

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse crowds in the neighbourhood of Lavapies. Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that six people were detained following the violence.
